Global orange juice shortage, bridging the gap مطلوب التوسع فى صناعة عصير البرتقال لمواجهة العجز فى الإنتاج العالمى

The Global crisis of orange juice has been in spotlight now for almost 3 years, where a global production shortages resulted from two major factors being weather conditions and diseases, particularly the citrus greening known as HLB ( Huanglongbing). The Brazil’s juice production represents almost 70% of the global production. This was ill fated due to the citrus greening and climate change, or weather conditions in general. Florida also, being a major production area, was affected by both greening and hurricanes. As such, the supply chain of juice was affected world wide, and there are efforts some factories had to mix local production of oranges with imported citrus, plus taking steps to add mandarine juice ( if UN food regulations permit ) to compensate for the shortages in orange production “ blended juice”, and just to produce the required volume of juice. As a result, prices soared and reached an unprecedented level. The climate change is affecting many areas world wide, and spread of the greening disease in many places in the world, also threaten the production of citrus to the extend that one professor stated: “ a range of varieties of citrus that are available to the consumer may disappear if this disease reaches our content” Leonardo Pena; a biologist at the Polytechnic University of Valencia in Spain. Here I can say the world orange juice prices will continue to raise if situation of weather conditions deteriorate as a result of the climate change, and due to the until-now-incurable disease ( HLB). Irrespective of the cause of the disease, the fact will remain is that disease is existing in some places in the world, and I am sure almost entirely all scientists are working hardly on finding a way out of this dilemma. Thanks to God, that our country is free of this disease, and that our weather conditions are favorable, and our production continue to increase, and our exports of fresh oranges now is ranking 1st among world exporters. However, now, we need to take an advantage of merits bestowed upon our country by God, and direct a part of fresh orange production to juice industry, without affecting fresh exports, so that we maintain our position in world markets of fresh oranges. In this context, I recommend planting extra acreage of orange specially for juice industry, namely Valencia and pay more attention to our Baladi Variety, which is essential in juice making, for its distinguished taste, and increase acreage as well, as I see that no much attention is given to this excellent variety, which almost disappearing from our markets, and/or no much attention is given to its quality. This variety is sometimes called “ early Valencia “ I recommend starting additional orange juice factories to bridge the gap in the global supply chain, and/or take a share in world juice market. I.
