The cargo ship MV Thamesborg ran aground in the Franklin Strait on September 6, 2025, while transiting the Northwest Passage. The ship, carrying industrial carbon blocks from China to Quebec, struck a shoal but remains in a stable condition with no injuries to its crew or release of pollution. All efforts to salvage the ship failed,. Authorities in Canada sent an icebreaker, and many SARs and cargo ship to transfer parts of cargo to in a trial to refloat it, but all efforts are in vain since Sept-6, 2025 till today Oct-05-2025. The North West Passage is indeed a risky passage, but it is supporting trade to a certain level. No enough navigational maps are available, icebreakers are not sufficient, rescue missions and infrastructure do not encourage easy sailing through the passage which is shut down almost complteley in winter times from November to March, where temperature goes down to as low as -40C, and where the passage is almost frozen during this period of the year, and navigation is not possible then.
