The Nature of Canada Archipealgo, General Cargo Ship Thamesborg in Northwest Passage

General cargo ship, Thamesborg, IMO 9546459, capacity 1228 TEU, with draught 9.38 meters, departed China heading to Canada via Canada Northwest Passage, the ship ran aground the night of sept 6, 2025, in Franklin Strait, while enroute from Lianyungang, China to Baie-Comeau, Canada. The ship remained stuck for almost one month and 6 days. The route is one of two main passageways through the polar region. It is made with 1A ice-class suitable for navigation in summer and fall. The arctic, NWP, saves some 14 days in travel time, and reduces 40% of emissions, the passage is 3750 miles shorter than the traditional route via Panama Canal. The ship was carrying carbon blocks for industrial use. Icebreakers arrived 9 hours later to assist in refloating, another vessel arrived to the scene and salvage efforts started by removing cargo from the ship to another ship that is silver Copenhagen, this ship-to-ship transfer helped to reduce weight on the grounded ship Thamesborg and therefore succeeded to refloat the ship. This Image taken sept 9, 25. Ship refloated around Oct 12, and continued sailing to final destination, followed by tugs, led by icebreaker, to its final destination, it arrived Baie-Cameau Oct 22, 2025. Total transit 66 days. Shorter transit, less emissions, but unluckily tt extended to 66 days as a result of ship grounding. China efforts to take advantage of the NWP are successful, and gradually the passage might be reliable, although it is shot down completely in winter times. In summer times, july/september ice melts and allows a window for sailing, but still risk is there as seen in the above example of the ship Thamesborg. More images to show progress throughout the route on almost daily basis are available. Ibrahim Gad, Gadco Egypt, Oct. 23, 2025.
