الإبحارحول أفريقيا Circumnavigating Africa

Among problems of diverting vessels around Africa ( via cape of good hope ) is the longer distance a vessel has to sail either from Asia to Europe and the Americas, or the opposite. The duration is extended by at least 3 weeks, and it reaches 25/26 days as well, depending on speed of the vessel. This definitely affected the movement of fresh produce, as this long voyages puts such products in jeopardy. However, among other problems is the hike in freight rates due to longer voyages, which affect the final price to the end consumer at destinations. Other negative aspects of this diversion is the longer voyage which means more burning of fuel by the vessel, which in turn has its negative impact on the overall weather of Earth ( climate change). Moreover, the distance from Morocco or Mauritania down to Namibia, there is no such facilities to vessels sailing aside the western coast of Africa, except I have seen once back in January a major shipping line used the port of Walvis Bay, enroute to turn around the tip of Africa. Other disadvantage is the sudden change in weather conditions, where in July and August, bad weather affected sailings down the content and one medium size vessel aground there, and almost two large vessels lost many containers due to instability in the water down there, one of them was lucky enough as it was close to Elizabeth port in SA, and managed to reach the anchor till weather conditions improved. Other problems as well, the shortage in availability of containers whether dry or reefers, resulting from longer round trip compared to earlier times.
